As announced by Daimler in June 2020, the company intends to invest systematically in the development of fuel cells. Experts from Daimler have already been able to gather extensive know-how in this field in recent years. Among other things, this has led to the production of the GLC F-Cell fuel cell car.
In order to ultimately develop and produce fuel cells itself, Daimler is building a new production facility that is adapted to the requirements. This plant is being built in Esslingen-Pliensauvorstadt. The complete pre-series production is to take place here. The construction is scheduled to be completed by next year (2021). Series production is to take place at a different location and the location decision will be made together with the partner in the fuel cell sector, the Volvo Group.
